Boat Detailing Made Simple: Practical Care to Ceramic Coating Advantages
Kevin VanderHeyden
Stage #2
Saturday, January 31
Learn practical, effective techniques for keeping your boat looking its best using straightforward products and methods that really work. This seminar will cover essential detailing practices, cleaning, polishing, and protecting your vessel without unnecessary complication or expense. We’ll also explore the benefits of ceramic coatings, including how they compare to traditional waxes and sealants, and why more boaters are choosing them for long-lasting shine and protection.
Kevin VanderHeyden
Several years ago after an extensive search, Kevin located a superior ceramic product for his own boat. Other boat owners began asking him to do their boats.
Kevin directed them to the Seattle Boat Show but found there weren't any vendors at that time with knowledge of ceramic products, consequently his company was soon established.
What sets Kevin apart from other ceramic installers is his 30+ experience in auto body repair. Others do not understand the importance of preparing the surface which is the most crucial part of the job. Without it the completed product (boat) will be inferior. Kevin takes satisfaction in projects that make things look new again whether it's renewing a boats gelcoat or hobbies he's involved in.

Marine Weather, Making the Go/No-Go Decision (4:00pm – 5:30pm)
Michael Beemer
Boat Show University
Sunday, February 1
Changing weather is one of the things most boaters and their crews fear most. Usually it is not deadly, but it can be downright scary when a pleasant day of boating turns ugly. Knowing the basics can help you interpret the weather and make a good go or no-go decision. This course will take you through the basics of how to understand the information available and how to combine it with tide and current information to determine the sea conditions. The class will use actual examples and gather weather data from the internet, cell phone and VHF radio. Software apps will be used and their shortcomings will be reviewed. They say timing is everything, and a few hours difference with the change of current can make all difference in the world. We will use a checklist approach where you can create your own system to create an understanding of the weather that fits your vessel and crew.
Michael Beemer
Michael Beemer is the department chair for Skagit Valley College's marine maintenance and repair program. Michael has been presenting and teaching professionally for over 20 years and holds a master's degree in education. At the college he teaches all the systems courses, including ABYC certifications. Saltwater Structure Strategies
Tom Nelson
Stage #3
Tuesday, February 3
Today’s anglers have the unique and unprecedented advantage of 24-hour access to tremendously accurate underwater cartography. Hyper-accurate electronic charts have never been better and on-board MFD’s (Multi-Function-Displays) are likewise improving, providing personal depth recording and becoming more affordable. Somehow lost in this technological “arms race” of marine electronics is a basic systematic approach to utilize these tools to find fish faster. Using the charts that we can now access on our phones, tablets and our boats we can now use the knowledge of underwater geology to unlock the fishes biology!
Tom Nelson
If you sleep in on Saturday mornings, you've probably never heard Tom "Nelly" Nelson on 710 ESPN Seattle's "The Outdoor Line" airing from 6-9am. Now in his 12th year in Seattle radio, "Nelly" fishing background comes through a lifetime of experience fishing for salmon, steelhead, bottom fish and trout in Washington's lakes, rivers and his beloved Puget Sound. Straits Halibut: How & Where
Joe Pyburn
Stage #3
Tuesday, February 3
If there's a species that is at the top of continuing to challenge and elude anglers regionally, the pacific halibut in the Straits of Juan de Fuca leads the pack. Join Joey Pyburn of Ray's Baits and The Outdoor Line Radio show as he unlocks this fishery from a tackle, tactical and topographic perspective. Joey Pyburn will cover anchoring, drifting, reading water, current flow concepts and the all-important durable bait presentations that will produce a halibut-attracting scent trail but not be stripped by the first strike. This will be a special season for halibut as our days on the water and catch quota will be increasing to the largest levels in a decade!

He grew up in the "Ray's Bait" family, one of the largest fishing bait processors in the Pacific Northwest. That knowledge led him to a job guiding anglers at a destination lodge in Alaska just out of high school and eventually to Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula where he guided for trophy rainbow trout for a season. His hunting knowledge runs just as deep and there are few hunters in the northwest with as much backcountry hunting experience as Joe. He's taken countless mule deer and elk in the backcountry of Washington, Idaho, and Montana and in the fall that's where you're likely to find him, in the backcountry. When he's not on the Outdoor Line radio show you'll find him at the helm of Ray's Bait processing and distributing bait of all kinds to tackle shops and anglers throughout the Pacific Northwest.

If there is a food that is more uniquely “Northwest” than smoked salmon we don’t know what it is. There is something primal about the relationship between salmon and smoke. Native Americans have used smoking as a method of preserving their fish and meats since the dawn of time and in the interim, all modern man has been able to do is refine the ancient process. In this seminar you'll get an introduction to wet and dry brines as well as hot and cold smoke processes but more importantly, you'll witness some of the best smoked salmon on the planet!
