By the end of this course, you will have gained the knowledge and confidence to administer timely, appropriate medical aid to those in your care at the dock or underway! Topics covered include: Seasickness, Dehydration, Lacerations/Puncture wounds, Broken bones/splinting, Burns-including sunburn, Heart attack/Stroke/Seizure, Hypothermia, Bites, Allergic Reactions/Infections, 1st Aid Kit- what do I really need? What should I make sure I have?, When is the situation bad enough that I should make the call to the Coast Guard?

This course will focus on safety preparations for boating in the Pacific Northwest, especially crew safety and short-handed crews. We will ‘walk’ through emergency equipment and procedures preparation on a typical recreational boat, as well as a checklist of actions the whole crew can do now to prepare for a safe and fun boating season. Participants will receive example templates for some safety procedures and list of specific resources for racers and sail/power cruisers. Participants will be able to submit questions in advance of the Q&A session.

Staying safe is the top priority for all! But what’s necessary equipment, and what’s over-hyped? Experienced sailors and circumnavigators will share a tiered list to help you prepare for sailing offshore: what you must have, what you might consider, and what’s optional.
